Urban Slum Children Education (USCE) Program

Although Bangladesh achieved access goal of universal primary education with gender parity yet there are pockets where universal access goal has not been achieved. A significant number of children in the urban centers, mostly live in slums and squatters, either never been to school or dropouts.

Nari Maitree has entered into an agreement with Save the Children in Bangladesh (SCiB)– the technical assistance provider of the Reaching the Out-of-School Children (ROSC) Phase -II, project to provide basic education to some 7560 children of 8-14 years age cohort in different parts of the Dhaka and Narayanganj cities. Supported by the World Bank, the Primary Education Directorate under the ministry of primary & mass education is the Lead Agency of the project.

The project envisages to cover as many as 50,000 (Fifty thousand) children from 11 city corporations of the country. Placement test would be conducted for the learners to enroll in appropriate grades. The learners would be provided with stipends. Emphasis has been laid on community participation and guardian engagement. The project covers 3 years period and will follow the accelerated course of basic education. The graduates of the course are equivalent of 5-year primary school certificate.

Project Goal

To scale up the Education Program and address the lack of educational opportunities for disadvantaged urban slum children for better livelihood through a non-formal approach for completion of primary education in the slums.


To create second chance for the children who are still out of school particularly those from poor and under-served areas, to stop child labor and child rights violation, to inspire continuation of education ensuring PCS exam appearance and to create opportunity for better livelihood options. The objective of the Reaching Out- of -School Children (ROSC) Project for Bangladesh is to ensure quality primary education for all. To achieve the goal ROSC-phase 2 project is implementing under the Ministry of Primary and Mass education. The project reduces the number-of-out school children through improved access, quality and efficiency in primary education especially for dis-advanced children in Urban slum of Dhaka and Narayangonj city corporation. Under this project 50000 children are targeted from 11 City Corporation who are aged between 8-14 years. All kinds of educational equipments will support by the project.

to ensure quality education with accelerate model, the project implementing learning centers (LC). Each Schools has 4-8 learning centers and each learning center have 25-30 children. A teacher is assigned for each LC.
