Women Health, Rights and Choices Project
Summary

Now a days Violation is a major issue in the world and Bangladesh isn't different. In our society violation occurred in different level and different ways. Most of the women and girls, children violation has victimized domestically. That the reasons of violation eliminate at slum level in Dhaka city We can campaign have implement one of the vital projects is "SHOKHI" a project on women's health, rights and choice funded by The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This reporting period January 2014 To December 2014 project performed some different types of activities to reduce the violence, sexual and reproductive rights of slum living women.


Goal

Increase social and economic empowerment of women living in 15 slums in the Mohakhali. Mirpur and Mohammadpur areas of Dhaka city and thereby increase their opportunities to lead a safe, healthy and happy life with dignity.

Project Activities and Expected Results:

a) Community empowerment to increase women's empowerment, safety and dignity through challenging social norms and informal power structures which condone and perpetuate violence against women, and prevent women from accessing employment and services. Recognizing this, the project will use community empowerment strategies to work towards an outcome where women living in slums are raising their voices and are being heard regarding the protection and recognition of their rights.


b) Advocacy at both the local and national level to increase women's empowerment, safety and dignity through removing some of the institutional objects to their realization, specifically the lack of protection of women's rights by relevant stakeholders. As such, the project will use advocacy to work towards an outcome where there is increased and effective implementation of existing laws and policies and initiatives taken for necessary reform with a focus on protection of women workers rights by relevant stakeholders, whether garment factory workers or domestic workers.


c) Direct service provision to increase women's empowerment, health, safety and dignity through lifting some of the constraints on women's access to the health and legal services which are essential to the realization of women's health and rights. Recognizing this, the project works towards an outcome where a working woman living in the slums is accessing the convenient, gender-friendly, and affordable and quality services she needs with fewer restrictions, in a protected environment within her community.

Objectives
  • To enable women's empowerment and provide economic, base on the consideration that a healthy worker is able to contribute meaningfully to society.

  • To further women's increase freedom of movement and increased capacity with regard to decision-making and negotiation skill. The intervention will jointly work with women in the community to overcome social, economic and legal (formal and non formal) barring prevailing in the slum environment and the work environment.

  • The intervention will create an innovative model/mechanism that will contribute to improving the overall social development of women and men in the selected areas. The intervention will lead to a sustainable impact in creating solidarity and knowledge sharing amongst slum-dwellers in recognized and realizing their right.


Achievements:
  • We have enrolled primarily 900 (F-730, M-170,) numbers of Change Makers from three working areas. After face to face interaction we have find out final 600 (F-430, M-170) CM from enrolled primary 900 CM lists.

  • 10 Batch is targeted for arrange and conduct change maker training in this reporting period. 10 Batch have been completed and 209 (F-172, M-35) numbers of group members are received training from mohammadpur area.

  • 08 change maker's team and 96 members organized and facilitate the mobile van campaign actively. They disseminate massage by slogan, leaflet, banner and brochure on our project related VAW and right based issues.

  • 18 cultural events completed in three project sites and 400 change makers are enrolled in this events.

  • 10 video shows completed and about 1200 community people participate there and 180 change makers enrolled.

Challenges:
  • "Women empowerment, D.V&VAW" related no positive awareness buildup in Mohakhali and Modammadpur areas people, because of previous time nobody worked with them so that, “Women empowerment, D.V&VAW" issues that peoples is not easily taken and shown the negative impressions.

  • Time is not similar for face to face conduct on our all targeted women at a time, because they are involved with different types work.

  • Office time shifting is the one of challenge for moving at night time in slum areas because slum’s house line is congested and narrow, not enough electricity support for moving and not maintaining a constant time or duration for responsible work.

  • SHOKHI is the consortium project, there are four (4) organizations working at a time in field areas for mobilization, but they are not similar Approach uses. That's why made a communication gap of the participants and staffs.

  • To ensure the quality of activities, especially for group session and complete the projected activities within given time frame due to unavailability of participants with respect to their working time.

Recommended remedies on Challenge:
  • Now we are involving community change makers to skill them on organizer capacity of community campaign activities with the assistance of our Info; facilitator. Attitude and behavior change is a long term issues, so if we get more time then it will be more effective and positive result oriented.

  • To overcome the challenges, We must re- Schedule the activities with respect to rapid action based plan , increase number of activities within time frame and training schedule prepare as per their given time.
